Avenger Field was once home to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), who served in World War II. Anticipating that all qualified American men and women would be required to fight in a global war, the U.S. military began training women to fly U.S. Army airplanes in 1943. The flight training was essentially the same as that for men.
WASPs ferried planes, towed targets, flew tracking missions and did smoke-laying. They simulated bombing missions and many other functions. Thirty-eight WASPs died in service.
By mid-1944, however, as the demand for pilots began to slacken, pressure from men in the U.S. Congress forced the program to close by refusing to reappropriate their funding. The program was officially disbanded on Dec. 7, 1944--the third anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Highways Sweetwater sits at the crossroads of U.S. I-20 and Highways 70 and 84. Highway 84 is a major divided, four-lane road connecting Sweetwater to Lubbock, approximately 120 miles northwest. Because of the central locale, businesses can easily access the Mexican markets and markets on the East and West Coasts.
Rail Today, the Sweetwater community boasts access to two rail lines--both the Burlington North Santa Fe and the Union Pacific. Few communities comparable in size to Sweetwater in the U.S. can lay a similar claim. Competition between the two rail companies ensures the lowest possible freight rates and access to markets nationwide.

The Sweetwater Treatment Plant (WTP) has a production capacity of 8.0 mgd. The plant treats surface water drawn from Lake Trammel and treats groundwater drawn from the Nena Lucia wells. Water from Lake Trammel is blended upstream from the plant with water from Nena Lucia wells. Raw water from available sources converges just ahead of the raw water blend tank to thoroughly mix water from all sources being drawn from. After the blend tank, the raw water is dosed with chlorine dioxide for pre-disinfection, undergoes coagulation, flocculation and membrane filtration. Ground water from the Champion wells is introduced to the WTP clear well just ahead of the post-filtration disinfection point at the treatment plant. The blended, treated water is chlorinated via injection of aqueous ammonia and chlorine gas in that order. Just prior to reaching the clear well, the finished water is dosed with fluoride for improved dental health of water customers. Finished water from the clear well is transported via gravity through two lines to the “old Plant” ground storage tanks. Finished water is pumped from the ground storage tanks at the Old Plant via five high service pumps to the distribution system.

Water Treatment The City of Sweetwater owns and operates an Activated Sludge wastewater treatment plant under permit number TX 0118346. The plant has a rated treatment capacity of 2.2 mgd. Sewage undergoes treatment in the plant consisting of prescreening, grit removal, activated sludge process, sedimentation and ultra-violet disinfection. Approximately 70 million gallons of treated sewage is reused offsite at a designated irrigation site each year. The remainder of the treated effluent is discharged into Sweetwater Creek and on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River segment Number 1232 of the Brazos River Basin. Sewage biosolids are digested before being dewatered onsite via a mechanical belt press prior to disposal at the regional landfill in Abilene.

History
An oasis with sweet water amid bitter-tasting gypsum streams, Sweetwater has always been a place to rest one's head and weary feet. Long before the settlers and ranchers arrived, the Kiowa Indians named the site "Mobeetie"--which was their word for "sweet water." These Indians, and later buffalo hunters, all stopped and set up shop. The town of Sweetwater was declared the seat of Nolan County on April 12, 1881, though not a single building of any description existed at the location. The city of Sweetwater was later incorporated in 1902. The building of the railroad and depot launched the city into a new chapter of growth.
During World War II, Avenger Field was once home to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), who flew U.S. Army airplanes on a variety of missions. By mid-1944, however, as the demand for pilots began to slacken, pressure from men in the U.S. Congress forced the program to close by refusing to reappropriate their funding. The program was officially disbanded on Dec. 7, 1944—the third anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The 70's and 80's were a period of trial for Sweetwater. Droughts in 1979, 1983 and 1984 cut cotton production by 25% and were similar in severity to the national depression in agriculture, which was sweeping the country. Cattle ranchers couldn't afford to feed their livestock and were forced to sell them at prices far below their normal value. The oil bust of the 80's was another blow to the local economy, as oil prices fell 60% between 1981-86. The economic repercussions of these events were no match, however, for the destruction of a major tornado, which struck the city on April 19, 1986.
Rather than give in to adversity, the city banded together and became an inspiration for cities across the U.S. because of its determination to rebuild itself. This was affirmed when the National Civic League named Sweetwater one of Ten All-American Cities in 1988. Sweetwater was the only finalist from Texas to be considered for this prestigious honor. To the community, the corner had been turned, and the best was yet to come.
Today, Sweetwater considers itself a community strengthened and prepared for the challenges of maintaining consistent economic growth. We are a forward-looking community, excited about what the future holds.
