Healthcare
Breathe in the clear air. Take in some of Texas’ most spectacular landscapes. Settling in the High Ground means never settling for less. A life here is a life well lived in every respect, and that includes wellness, thanks in part to abundant recreation and the reduced stress of lower costs and easier commutes. Wellbeing is also assured through the dozens of dedicated community hospitals and hospital districts that blanket the region, with several leading healthcare hubs setting the pace and supplying world-class practitioners.
Leading Practitioners + Leading Facilities.
As the home of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, the High Ground reaps the benefits of a powerful talent pipeline for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare staff. Since opening in 1969, TTUHSC has trained more than 4,000 physicians, with alumni making up 20% of current West Texas practicing physicians. And high-caliber practitioners are supported by state-of-the-art facilities, brought about in some cases by strategic mergers which have strengthened healthcare systems for a robust and fiscally fit future. Veterans Administration facilities are also important drivers of innovation.
High Ground healthcare hubs include:
The Hendrick Health System provides a comprehensive array of services and facilities for specialized and general care, operating through a three-hospital system including Hendrick Medical Center and Hendrick Medical Center South in Abilene. Affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the not-for-profit system cares for all area residents regardless of ability to pay. A winner of national care awards for nursing, cancer care and stroke care among other areas, Hendrick has also been identified as a “Great Place to Work” in multiple national surveys.
A six-time winner of the national “Top 100 Hospital” designation, Baptist St. Anthony became an affiliate of Ardent Health Services in 2013, a prominent system operating more than 20 hospitals and physician groups across the nation. That means robust system resources help support BSA’s services across 28 different areas of care in a 378-bed facility. The Amarillo VA Health System provides primary, specialty and extended Veteran care, serving the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and northeast New Mexico.
The academic teaching hospital for TTUHSC, the 495-bed University Medical Center is also a leading innovator in care services and winner of multiple quality awards. A Level I Trauma Center, University Medical Center serves more than 300,000 people through its Emergency Medical Services. An affiliate of St. Joseph Health, Covenant Medical Center is one of several St. Joseph’s ministries, which also include Covenant Children’s Hospital.
Expansions at the 474-bed Midland Health have included a nine-story patient tower, and today the hospital offers comprehensive services that include a Heart Institute and a Total Joint Center as well as extensive women’s and children’s care. The formation of a hospital district has enabled the hospital to care for all patients, regardless of ability to pay.
The 402-bed Medical Center Health provides the services of a Level II trauma Center as well as care in a comprehensive array of areas not only through the hospital but also through multiple associated clinics.
Patients saw immediate benefits in the merger that created Shannon Medical Center and Shannon South, first through improved access to health information made possible by a digital upgrade. Patients also benefit from a wide range of care services including a Level II Neonatal Center, robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery and a cardiac cath lab.
